  • Greendale Construction Continues Essential Repairs And Upgrades To Historic Uppark House

Greendale Construction Continues Essential Repairs And Upgrades To Historic Uppark House

Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, is continuing essential repairs and upgrades to Uppark House and Gardens, South Harting, Petersfield, West Sussex. The Grade 1 listed, 17th century National Trust property will benefit from new electrical systems, new fire alarm installations, fire protection works, a new water treatment plant, and two new Biomass boilers. Work started in August 2024, and upon completion in March 2025, will leave the house in a better position to store and display its historic collections.

Built in 1690 by Ford Grey, the Earl of Tankerville, Uppark House was a project to demonstrate the Earl’s wealth and his political allegiances. Ford commissioned the building in the fashionable Anglo-Dutch style, favouring symmetry and simplicity as key attributes in the architecture, together with redbrick and stone dressings; an important stylistic choice which reinforced Grey’s political leanings. Having undergone various decorative and architectural alterations over its 400 years, the Uppark House of today owes much to Sir Matthew and Lady Sarah Fetherstonhaugh who are responsible for its fine Georgian interiors and most if its Grand Tour art collection. Having bought Uppark for £19,000 (around £4 million today) in 1747 from Charles Tankerville, Ford Grey’s grandson, Fetherstonhaugh commissioned an extensive remodelling of the interior with architect James Paine. Later, the house was extended and altered by Humphry Repton. Uppark House was acquired by the National Trust 1954.

Rob Hooker, Director, Greendale Construction Limited, commented: “Greendale is proud to be involved in restoring Uppark House – an amazing building full of history – for the National Trust. It’s great to be working with architects, Rodney Melville and Partners, who we have previously worked with on Highcliffe Castle and the Windsor Royal Household projects. Greendale’s previous experience with historic, heritage and conservation projects is extensive, and includes Highcliffe Castle, Poole Museum, Christchurch Priory walls, Durlston Castle, and Shire Hall in Dorchester, to name but a few. We’re delighted to add Uppark House to our portfolio and even more delighted that the public will benefit from these essential works when the doors re-open this summer.”

  • Greendale Construction Attributes Highest Turnover In 34 Years To Investment In Staff And Training

Greendale Construction Attributes Highest Turnover In 34 Years To Investment In Staff And Training

Chartered Builders, Greendale Construction Limited, has announced its highest turnover of £20.4 million in 34 years of trading, attributing a pivotal part of this achievement to the firm’s continued investment in its staff and training. With a significant increase of 38%, 2023-24 saw the Poole founded company mark a monumental milestone following the previous year’s return to profitability.

Rob Hooker, Director, Greendale Construction, commented: “A combination of strategic changes, a risk-averse approach to business, and continuing to expand our operating area eastwards into Hampshire, Berkshire, Surrey and the M3 corridor, has contributed to Greendale’s growth and record turnover. Crucially however, it is through the hard work and dedication of our very adaptable staff, who help us successfully deliver a diverse range of first-class projects.

“We have long recognised the importance of cultivating a skilled, knowledgeable and fulfilled workforce, believing that investing in training and professional development is the foundation of our growth and success. Over the years, we have established strong apprenticeship and graduate schemes, offering opportunities for our employees to build their careers within the company. Additionally, we support our staff with a range of safety and mental health training courses, ensuring employees are equipped with the knowledge and skills they need to succeed in the ever-evolving construction industry.”

Greendale has also taken proactive steps to adapt to changing economic conditions. Despite the challenges presented by fluctuating political and economic climates, the company has implemented strategies to navigate industry challenges and maintain consistent profitability.

Rob Hooker, continued: “We are excited about the future. With an impressive portfolio covering all sectors, we’re particularly proud of our work within the growing heritage sector. Greendale has helped restore and maintain buildings of historic importance for future generations to enjoy, including most recently, Poole Museum, Scaplans Court, Uppark House and Dorchester’s Corn Exchange. Our commercial sector is exceptionally strong with recent projects for Bournemouth Airport and Lasham Gliding Club. The Health, and Education sectors are buoyant, with Greendale working on numerous SCOLA recladding projects for Hampshire County Council, as well as large refurbishments for Bournemouth University. With busy offices in both Winchester and Poole, we’re looking forward to another year of sustained growth and profitability on the projects we deliver.”
